Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (optional, for smoother melting)

Decoration Options

  • Holiday sprinkles
  • Mini candy pearls
  • Snowflake sprinkles
  • Red and green sanding sugar
  • Crushed peppermint candy
  • Gold sugar stars

Optional Tree Trunks

  • Pretzel sticks or pretzel rods

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Surface: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. For uniform trees, lightly sketch tree shapes on the underside of the parchment as a guide.
  2. Melt the Chocolate: Place semi-sweet chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth. Add a small amount of vegetable oil if desired for a silkier texture. Repeat in a separate bowl with the white chocolate if you plan to use both.
  3. Fill the Piping Bag: Spoon the melted chocolate into a piping bag or a zip-top bag. Snip a tiny opening at one corner for controlled piping.
  4. Pipe the Tree Shapes: Pipe a straight vertical line as the “trunk” guide. Then pipe zigzag lines back and forth across the vertical line, starting narrow at the top and widening toward the base to create a tree shape. If using pretzel sticks, pipe the tree directly over the top portion of each pretzel to secure it.
  5. Decorate Immediately: While the chocolate is still wet, sprinkle on holiday sprinkles, candy pearls, sanding sugar, snowflake sprinkles, crushed peppermint, or gold sugar stars. Decorate as simply or as creatively as you like.
  6. Chill to Set: Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes, or until the chocolate trees are completely firm.
  7. Remove and Use: Gently lift the chocolate trees off the parchment using your fingers or a thin spatula. Use them to decorate cakes, cupcakes, cookie trays, hot cocoa boards, or enjoy as festive stand-alone treats.

Notes

  • Tempering Tip: For shinier, more stable trees, melt about 75% of the chocolate, then stir in the remaining 25% off the heat until smooth. This simple tempering method helps prevent dull or streaky chocolate.
  • Piping Practice: Practice piping a few trees on scrap parchment first to get comfortable with the zigzag motion and spacing of branches.
  • Structure & Thickness: Make branches slightly thicker and wider toward the bottom so the trees are sturdy and less likely to break.
  • Creative Variations: Use green-tinted white chocolate for classic tree color, drizzle white chocolate over dark trees for a “snowy” look, or create marbled trees by swirling dark and white chocolate together.
  • Common Mistakes: Avoid overheating the chocolate, using wet tools, or piping trees too thin. Decorate while the chocolate is still soft so the toppings stick well.
  • Storage: Store chocolate trees in a single layer (or separated with parchment) in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days, away from heat or direct sunlight.
  • Gifting Idea: Wrap each tree in a clear treat bag, tie with a festive ribbon, and pack several into a holiday tin or gift box for a charming edible gift.
  • Serving Suggestions: Pair with hot cocoa, peppermint tea, chai, warm spiced milk, or coffee for a cozy holiday treat.
