Description

These homemade biscuits are soft, flaky, and buttery with a lightly crisp exterior. Made from simple pantry ingredients, they come together quickly and bake up tender and fluffy—perfect for breakfast, brunch, or alongside any comforting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, very cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup cold milk or buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add cold butter and cut into the flour until coarse crumbs form with some pea-sized pieces.
  4. Add Milk: Pour in cold milk or buttermilk and stir gently until just combined.
  5. Shape Dough: Transfer dough to a floured surface. Pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle, fold in half, pat down, and repeat once.
  6. Cut Biscuits: Cut straight down using a biscuit cutter or glass. Place biscuits close together on the baking sheet.
  7. Bake: Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Cold ingredients: Keep butter and milk very cold for best flakiness.
  • Do not overmix: Gentle handling keeps biscuits tender.
  • Buttermilk option: Adds extra richness and softness.
  • Variations: Add cheese, herbs, or brush with melted butter after baking.
  • Storage: Store airtight for 2 days or freeze after baking.
