Ingredients
Scale
For the Sugar Cookies:
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
For the Blood Splatter:
- 3 tablespoons light corn syrup
- Red gel food coloring (start with 1/2 teaspoon; adjust as needed)
- 1–2 drops blue or black gel coloring (optional, for depth)
- Shortcut: Red gel icing can be used, but homemade syrup looks most realistic.
Instructions
- Preheat: Heat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment or silicone mats.
- Dry mix: Whisk flour, baking soda, and baking powder in a medium bowl; set aside.
- Cream: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy (2–3 minutes). Beat in egg, vanilla, and almond extract (if using).
- Make dough: Gradually mix in dry ingredients just until combined.
- Shape: Scoop ~1 1/2 tablespoon portions, roll smooth, and place 2 inches apart. Gently press to slightly flatten (they won’t spread much).
- Bake: Bake 8–10 minutes until edges are just turning golden and centers are pale/soft. Cool 5 minutes on sheet, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
- Make edible blood: Stir corn syrup with red gel coloring until vivid and drippy. Add a tiny drop of blue/black for a deeper tone if desired.
- Splatter: Protect your work area. Dip a fork (or clean toothbrush) into the “blood,” then flick or pull bristles with your finger ~6 inches above cookies to create realistic spatter. Optional: drizzle lines with a spoon or pipe drips.
- Set & serve: Allow splatter to set slightly. Plate and enjoy!
Notes
- Tips: Use gel coloring (not liquid) for vivid, non-watery splatter; let cookies cool fully before decorating; practice flicks on parchment first; less splatter looks more realistic and less sticky.
- Theme ideas: Knife-shaped cutters with dripping “blood”; zombie bites (tint dough green); black cocoa cookies with red splatter; ghost faces piped in white then splattered.
- Serving: Present on black/red trays with Halloween props; wrap in clear treat bags for favors; pair with “bloody” (tinted) milk.
- Storage: Airtight container up to 5 days at room temp; refrigerate decorated cookies in warm climates; freeze plain cookies up to 2 months and decorate after thawing.
- Variations: Chocolate base; add 1/2 tsp cinnamon + pinch nutmeg; lemon swap (zest + lemon extract); red velvet; gluten-free with a 1:1 blend.
- Avoid: Overbaking (keeps them soft); watery colorings; decorating warm cookies; over-splattering; skipping a test flick.
- Kid-friendly: Yes—great supervised activity (cover surfaces first!).
